Taxon Profile     (Last Modified On 12/12/2016)
Description: Plants 450–1 350 mm high, solitary or several stems together forming small tufts. Corm ± 15–30 mm diam. Stem with lowermost peduncle 45–180 mm long. Foliage leaves several to many, 300–900 × 2.5–6.0(–9) mm; reduced sheathing leaves 3 or 4. Spikes pendulous, terminal 4–11-flowered, laterals (1)4–8, each 2–10-flowered; bracts lanceolate to oblong-obovate, acute to acuminate, 10–25 × 5–8 mm, rarely up to 2 internodes long, usually lightly to heavily flecked all over or with white margins shoulders, secondary veins 4 to 6 each side of main vein. Flowers funnel-shaped, pale to dark pink or rarely almost white; perianth tube 5–8(–9) mm long; tepals (10–)13–20(–25) × 5–11 mm. Anthers (5–)5.5–8.0 mm long. Stigmas held 2.5–15 mm below top of perianth. Flowering time: (June) September to December (April).
Country: South Africa
South African Province: Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal
Distribution and ecology: extending through coastal KwaZulu-Natal from Durban south to East London and inland to the Katberg in Eastern Cape; in open grassland, from near sea-level to 1 500 m.
Diagnosis: a solitary or tufted species with stems 450–1 350 mm tall and pendulous spikes of moderately-sized pink flowers with perianth 16–31(–34) mm long and tube 5–8(–9) mm long. Dierama pendulum has broader bracts, 8–13 mm wide and generally larger flowers with perianth tube 9–13 mm long and longer anthers 8–9 mm long. The two species co-occur at Grahamstown. D. igneum is also sympatric with D. pulcherrimum, distinguished by its mostly larger, bell-shaped perianth 35–54 mm long, and the two species appear to hybridise in the Amatole Mtns.
