Taxon Profile     (Last Modified On 2/15/2017)
Description: Plants solitary, (100–) 150–300 mm high, usually branched, with obture-truncate cataphylls. Corm ca. 10 mm diam.; tunics of fine to medium netted fibers. Foliage leaf solitary, basal, usually slightly shorter than rhipidia, chanelled, up to 6 mm wide, with slightly thickened hyaline margins, cauline leaf inserted close to base of lowermost rhipidium, up to 30 mm long, sheathing at the base only, acuminate. Rhipidia two or more, crowded at stem apex; spathes green, acuminate; inner 30–45 mm long, outer ca. 1/2 as long, often not sheathing distally. Flowers blue with pale yellow to white nectar guides on outer tepal limbs; outer tepals ca. 30 mm long, lanceolate,  limb ca. 15 mm long, spreading to slightly reflexed, inner tepals ca. 20 mm long, spreading. Filaments ca. 7 mm long, united in lower 1/3; anthers 6 mm long. Ovary unusually 8-12 mm long, enclosed in spathes; style branches ca. 10 mm long, crests to 8 mm long. Capsules and seeds not known. Flowering time: December to January.
Country: Tanzania
Distribution and ecology: restricted to the southern highlands of Tanzania, recorded between Sao Hill and Makumbako; in grassland and open Brachstegia woodland at 1,800–2,200 m.
Diagnosis: Moraea iringensis is closely allied to the more widespread M. afro-orientale which occurs in western and central Tanzania, Uganda, western Kenya and the southern Sudan. It differs in being more robust, with larger leaves and flowers, and it is distinctive in having a long ovary, 8–12 mm long, compared to 3–4 mm in M. afro-orientale. In spite of its length, the ovary is almost entirely enclosed in the spathes, in contrast to the exserted ovary found in allied species.
