Scutellaria costaricana H. Wendl., Hamburger Garten- Blumenzeitung 19: 29. 1863.

Weak shrubs or suffrutescent herbs, 0.3—2 m; ramas jóvenes con tricomas glandular-capitate patent 0.1—0.25 mm de largo, or these absent, and eglandulares, spreading to antrose, 0.02—0.25 mm de largo. Hojas elliptic-subpandurate, 4.7—19 cm de largo y 1.5—8.5 cm de ancho, ápice acuminate and often falcate, base greatly estrechada y después desigualmente cordada con senos 1—5 mm de profundidad, haz with few hairs 0.1—0.4 mm de largo; pecíolos 0.7—5 cm de largo, los medios más cortos to longer que los entrenudos, 0.75—1.8 mm de ancho. Inflorescencia 2.2—14 cm de largo (to 25 cm de largo in fruit), con flores tightly spiraled, falsely corymbose, radiating en la antesis, erect to spreading with age, brácteas usually persisting into fruit; cáliz 3--5 mm de largo, escutelo 1—1.5 mm de alto; corola reddish orange with lips lighter orange to yellow, el tubo con la gálea 46--65 mm de largo, tubo straight and cylindrical at base (infrequently slightly curved upward) y 1—2 mm de ancho por 4—11 mm, después slightly curvado to nearly straight y dilatado a 5—7.25 mm de ancho en el ápice, labio inferior 4—9.5 mm de largo, labio superior 5--10 mm de largo. Known in Nicaragua from one collection (A. Urbina 182) from Comunidad Aguas Zarcas (Mun. El Castillo, Rio San Juan), 350 m; fl mar; Nicaragua to Panama.
