Rhizomes long, slender, the roots not thickened. Aerial stems 15–40 cm long,
solid. Leaves 3.5–8.0 cm long, sessile, glaucous, but glabrous on the
undersurface. Perianth 1.2–2.5 cm long, pale yellow. Fruits 8–15 mm long, the
tip pointed, the angles winged. 2n=14. April–May.
Scattered north of the Missouri River, uncommon in the southern half of the
state (eastern U.S. and adjacent Canada west to North Dakota and Louisiana).
Mesic bottomland forests, less commonly in mesic upland forests in ravines and
valleys.
