‘Dumb Cane’ is cultivated at the Gandhi Garden, Karachi and possibly elsewhere. Native to W. Indies. Cultivated for its mottled handsome foliage overtopping the stem. The juice of the stem contains a poisonous chemical which can partially paralyze the power of speech. In former times it was used to torture slaves (Willis, l.c.).
