1b. var. pubescens (Willd.) Correll (large yellow lady’s slipper)

C. pubescens Willd. (Luer, 1975; Sheviak, 1974)

Leaves 3 or 4 (5) per flowering stem. Sepals and lateral petals yellowish green with reddish purple streaks. Lateral petals 5–9 cm long. Lip 3–6 cm long.

Scattered nearly throughout Missouri, but somewhat more common in the eastern half of the state (U.S., Canada). North‑ and east‑facing slopes of ravines and stream valleys in rich, mesic, upland forests, rarely on seepy ledges or in moist soil of shallow depressions at the edge of glades.
