Tallos 1–6 m de largo, erectos o semitrepadores, fistulosos. Vainas pilosas; lígula (3.5–) 4–6 (–7) mm de largo, lacerada; láminas elíptico o linear-lanceoladas, (6–) 8–12 (–16) cm de largo y 1–2.2 (–3) cm de ancho, puberulentas en el envés, escábridas en la haz. Panícula casi esférica, (1–) 4–9 cm de largo, la base generalmente incluida, ramas divergentes o a veces algo reflexas, profusamente ramificadas, pedicelos patentes; espiguillas obovoides, (3.5–) 3.7–4.1 (–4.5) mm de largo; gluma inferior (1.2–) 1.7–2 (–2.8) mm de largo, 7–11-nervia, gluma superior 9–13-nervia; flósculo inferior estéril o rudimentariamente estaminado; lema inferior 11–13-nervia; pálea inferior 2/3 a casi tan larga como el flósculo superior; flósculo superior 3.5–3.6 mm de largo y 1.8–2 mm de ancho.

Común, linderos de bosques, vegetación secundaria, en todo el país; 0–1000 m; fl y fr feb–abr; Pipoly 5994, Stevens 12280; sur de México a Perú. "Zacate".
