E. submuticus (Hook.) Smyth

E. virginicus var. jenkinsii Bowden

Stems mostly 60–110 cm long, erect. Inflorescence 9–16 cm long, 0.7–1.5 cm wide (including the awns, if present), with the base positioned above the uppermost leaf sheath or sometimes enclosed in it. Spikelets erect to somewhat spreading (to 45° from the axis). Glumes awnless or with the awn 1–3(–5) mm long. Lemmas awnless or with the awn 1–3(–5) mm long.

Widely scattered, mostly north of the Missouri River (western and northeastern U.S.; Canada). Bottomland forests, mesic upland forests, and banks of streams; also pastures, fallow fields, and open, disturbed areas.
