Gay described the species from staminate plants only. The staminate lemmas are glabrous at P and K. Packet 2 on the US sheet has a pistillate spikelet: that comes from a separate specimen at P that is proabably P. holciformis, lemmas large & glabrous. The K sheet has plants a and b. "a" is type material of P. gayana, staminate, lemmas glabrous, culms densely scabrous below nodes and ligules long and scabrous; it is a good match for fragmentary P holotype material at US. "b" at K is pistillate with lemmas pub on 3 nerves, and prominent web, it is less scabrous than "a"
