Annotation: Stipa occidentalis had 2 syntypes, M&B-D selected the Bolander syntype as the type of their var. montana, and explicitly identified the Watson 1296 as the type of the species. However Bolander 5038 was also a syntype of Stipa stricta var. sparsiflora Vasey
