Annotation: Eriksen (1996a; Taxon 45: 631-640) considered the name Monnina xalapensis Kunth to be illegitimate according to ICBN Art. 52.1, i.e., as definitely including the type of Hebeandra evonymoides Bonpl. (1808), the epithet of which (following this logic) ought to have been adopted by Kunth. In the same paper, Eriksen lectotypified both names on a Humboldt & Bonpland specimen at P-Bonpl. She simultaneously (Eriksen 1996b; Taxon 45: 701-703) proposed the widely used M. xalapensis for conservation over the neglected H. evonymoides, but that proposal was subsequently rejected (Taxon 48: 364. 1999). As a result, Eriksen (in herb.) has since taken up the next available name applicable to this species, the heterotypic Monnina evonymoides Schltdl. (1840), the existence of which precludes the transfer of Bonpland's earlier name to Monnina. However, contrary to Eriksen's original argument, Monnina xalapensis Kunth does not qualify as an illegitimate name under Art. 52.1, which requires (as specified in Art. 52.2) citation of the holotype, all syntypes, or the previously designated lectotype or neotype; indeed, the very act of lectotypification on Eriksen's part (including the phrase "designated here") bears testimony to the inapplicability of Art. 52.1 in this circumstance (one might also question whether "citation" of any particular specimen was achieved by Kunth). Thus M. xalapensis is legitimate after all. Eriksen's lectotypifications do have the effect of firmly establishing M. xalapensis and Hebeandra evonymoides as synonyms, but the existence of the blocking name M. evonymoides Schltdl. dictates that M. xalapensis must remain as the accepted name for the species. [[[N.B.: several other Kunth names in Monnina deemed illegitimate by Eriksen, and for which her conservation proposals were rejected along with that of M. xalapensis, must likewise be reinstated, according to the foregoing conclusions.]]]
