Nomenclature :

   Fallopia convolvulus (L.) á. Löve, Taxon 19: 300 (1970). Polygonum convolvulus L., Sp. Pl. 364 (1753); Boiss., Fl. Orient. 4: 1032 (1879). Bilderdykia convolvulus (L.) Dumort., Fl. Belg. 18 (1827). Type: Described from Europe, Herb. Linn. no. 510.38 (LINN). [Plate 64a]

Common name :

Black Bindweed; פלופיה חבלבלית

Habitat :

Weed in irrigated gardens and waste places and other disturbed habitats. Philistean Plain, Mt. Carmel, Judean Mts., Judean Desert,  Dead Sea Area. Rare. New to our Flora.

Area distribution :

Euro-Siberian and Irano-Turanian.

Notes :

     A widespreading probably invading weed in many regions, its first collection in Israel is from 1982.

     Annual, puberulent or slightly mealy, up to 1 m. Stems thin, twining or spreading, angular. Leaves 2-6 cm. long, cordate-sagittate, acuminate; petiole almost as long as blade. Flowers in narrow paniculate, axillary spike-like inflorescences. Pedicels 2-3 mm. long, articulate above middle. Perianth-segments 2-2.5 mm., greenish-white, the outer ones somewhat larger, keeled or slightly winged in fruit. Stamens 8. Achene 4-5 mm. but not protruding, black, granulate. Fl. April- July.
