1b. var. pseudocaudatum (Clute) A. Heller Pl. 3c

Pinnules mostly glabrous, sometimes with scattered hairs on the upper surface margins. Terminal lobes of the pinnules mostly 4–9 times as long as wide. July–September.

Scattered nearly throughout the species’ range, mostly in southern Missouri (eastern U.S. west to Texas and Missouri, mostly in the southeastern states). Openings of rocky, upland forests and road banks, mostly in acid soils.
