Nomenclature :

1.  Marsilea minuta L., Mantissa Alt. 308 (1771). Marsilea diffusa A. Braun, Flora (Regensburg) 22: 300 (1839); Boiss., Fl. Orient. 5: 750 (1884). Type: India (lectotype: LINN 1254.6). [Plate 5]

Common name :

Pepperwort; (מרסילאה זעירה) מרסיליה זעירה.

Habitat :

Swamps and swamp edges. Hula Plain. Very rare, probably extinct in nature.

Area distribution : Trop. Africa, Canary Islands, Egypt and probably elsewhere.
Notes :

     Reaches here the northern limit of its distribution, but has apparently disappeared from the country since the drying up of the Hula swamps. Grown as an ornamental in the muddy margins of pools.

Perennial. Rhizome long, rooting at nodes, almost glabrous, at least when adult. Leaves long-petioled; leaflets 1-2.5 cm, obovate-cuneiform, with repand to praemorse upper margin, pubescent, later glabrescent. Sporocarps inserted at base or slightly above base of petiole in groups of 2-4, each on a free pedicel twice as long as sporocarp or longer; sporocarp recurved, ellipsoidal and compressed or lenticular, rounded at apex or more or less truncate, with 2 teeth at base, appressed-hairy when young, then glabrescent; sori 5-6 on each side of the gelatinous ring. Summer.
