Rhizomes ascending, the scales brown, linear to linear-lanceolate, the margins entire. Leaves 3–20 cm long. Petioles dark brown. Leaf blades 3–5 times compound, deltoid-ovate in outline. Pinnules 1.5–3.5 mm long, mostly glabrous above, densely white-farinose below, linear to ovate, sometimes few-lobed, the margins somewhat recurved and partially covering the sporangia. Veins difficult to observe, unbranched or with 1 lateral branch. Sporangia along the veins, usually restricted to the terminal 1/2 of each vein, sometimes nearly covering the pinnule underside. Spores 64 per sporangium, 40–60 mm in diameter, dark brown. 2n=54. June–September.

Northwestern and southwestern Missouri, locally east to St. Louis and Pike Counties (Texas to Kentucky and Nebraska). Crevices of dry limestone and dolomite bluffs and boulders.
