Description Small tree reaching 15 m, the branches slender, seemingly dioecious. Leaves opposite or whorled, ovate, somewhat falcate, apically acute, basally rounded or obtuse, entire, 7-12 cm long, 4-5 cm wide, the lateral venation arcuate, drying conspicuously impressed, minor venation obscure, glabrate, perhaps a few minute hairs along the costa above; petioles short, 3-5 mm long, pubescent beneath; stipules linear, flat, 6-9 mm long. Inflorescences short aments clustered in ter- minal leaf axils, the flowers crowded, the peduncle and the rachis to 15 mm long, hispidulous, drying reddish brown, the bracts narrowly ovate, acute, ciliate, each subtending 1-2 flowers, the pedicels short to obsolete, to 0.5 mm long. Note This species occurs in low elevation mountain forests of Panama and Costa Rica. The above description of fruit is taken from Costa Rican collections.
Distribution Panama and Costa Rica.
