Annual herbs, 25–75 (–100) cm tall. Stem erect, simple or branched usually from middle or sometimes from the lower part; stems and branches purple–red, green, or straw–colored, whitish pubescent or thinly lanate. Leaves broadly ovate or deltoid, petiole (0.7–) 1–3 cm long; cauline leaves 2–6 cm long, 1.5–3.5 cm wide; upper and axillary leaves smaller; main stem and upper and axillary leaves basally 3–rarely 5–veined, cordate or truncate, sparsely or densely white pubescent on both sides, margins crenate–serrate, apex rounded or acute; petioles of upper leaves and of axillary branches usually spreading, white long tomentose. Synflorescence corymbose, 2–4 cm in diameter; peduncle densely or sparsely pubescent. Capitula 5–15 or more; 6–7 mm across, florets many. Involucre campanulate; phyllaries 2–3–seriate, narrowly lanceolate, 4–5 mm long, abaxially glandular pubescent, apex long acuminate. Corolla tubular, 2.5–3.5 mm long, limb purplish with pubescent lobes. Cypselas black, 5–angled, 1.5–1.7 mm long; sparsely hairy on ribs. Pappus of 5, short, free scales, scales oblong–lanceolate, 2–3 mm long, apex aristate–acuminate, rarely truncate, 0.1–1.5 mm wide.
