Europe, Mediterranean region, Armenia, Kurdistan,  Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia. Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.   

Comment/Acknowledgements:

On dry rocky-sandy slopes, stony and gravel areas, roadsides, field margins, at the  elevation  between 800-2700 m.

Biennial with taproot. Stem 45 – 80  cm tall, flocosse mostly at the base, branches virgate, mostly straight with decurrent leaves. Leaves sessile-shortly petiolate, pinnatifid-sect or sinuate-pinnately lobed, 4–8  x 0.3–1 cm, lacinate, retrorse, somewhat toothed, acute, decurrent with long, linear auricles; cauline leaves small, sessile, linear, 0.5 – 2  x 0.2 – 0.4 cm. Synflorescence paniculately spiciform. Capitulum 0.5 – 1 x c. 0.5 cm, cylindrical, with 4 florets, subsessile-shortly pedunculate, peduncle covered with scaly bracts. Involucre phyllaries 12-14, 3-4 -seriate, scarious; outer ones 1.5 – 5  x 1 – 1.5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, subacute; inner ones 8 – 10 (-13) x 1.5 - 2 mm, linear-oblong, obtuse. Florets yellow. Cypselas 3.5 – 6  x 1 – 1.5 mm long, black, linear-fusiform, scabridulous with 7-9 ribs, gradually attenuate into 3.5 – 8  mm long, slender- filiform beak, ribs and beak also scabridulous. Pappus 6 – 7 mm long, white.
