Stems somewhat
less variable, 5–100 cm long, glabrous or nearly so. Leaves
0.5–8.0 cm long, glabrous or more commonly sparsely hairy along the
margins and sometimes also the midvein. Involucral bracts mostly with a small
area of dark purple at the tip. June–November.
Uncommon in the
southeastern portion of the state (southeastern U.S. north locally to New York and west locally to Arizona). Sand prairies and openings of mesic to dry upland
forests; also old fields and open, disturbed areas.
