Stems sparsely
hairy with short, usually spreading to ascending hairs, often glabrous toward
the base. Basal leaves with the blade mostly narrowly to broadly ovate or
elliptic, seldom cordate at the base. Median and upper stem leaves with the
blade lanceolate, oblanceolate, or elliptic, often tapered or angled at the
base, only slightly expanded and inconspicuously wrapping around the stem, the
margins usually sharply toothed. Ray florets 10–21, the corolla mostly 2.5–4.0
cm long. 2n=38, about 76. July–October.
Scattered in the
Ozark, Ozark Border, and Unglaciated Plains Divisions (eastern U.S. west to
Wisconsin and Arkansas; introduced in Canada). Banks of streams, rivers, and
spring branches, fens and calcareous seeps, marshes, and bottomland forests;
also roadsides.
