2c. var. caroliniana A. Gray

S. arguta ssp. caroliniana (A. Gray) G.H. Morton

S. arguta var. boottii, misapplied

Stems glabrous below the inflorescence or sparsely pubescent with mostly curved hairs toward the tip. Leaf blades with the undersurface glabrous. Fruits finely hairy. 2n=18, 36 (apparently 2n=18 in Missouri). June–October.

Uncommon and widely scattered in the Ozark and Ozark Border Divisions (southeastern U.S. west to Missouri and Louisiana). Mesic upland forests often above bluffs and banks of streams and rivers, often on acidic substrates.

This is the least common of the three varieties in Missouri.
