Erect, (10-) 20 – 60 cm tall annual herb, usully branched from near the base with ascending shoots. Leaves ± densely to laxly grey floccose hairy; lower cauline leaves inconspicuously petiolate, oblanceolate or lanceolate, often somewhat lyrately lobed with large, oblong or lanceolate terminal lobe and 2 – 3 pairs of linear lateral lobes; median and upper cauline leaves sessile, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, longer than internodes, apically mucronulate.. Capitula solitary at tips of branches, ca 2 cm across. Involucre ovoid to campanulate, (13-) 14 – 18 (-20) mm long, 8 – 12 mm wide. Phyllaries multiseriate, espinose, green, glabrous, outer ovate, inner oblong, appendages scarious, silvery white to brown, decurrent, with 1.5 – 2 (-3) mm long teeth or lacerations. Florets usually violet blue or purplish-blue, marginal radiant, sterile, 2 – 2.5 cm long, with broader lanceolate, unequal-sized limb lobes; central violaceous, bisexual, 1.5 – 1.8 cm long. Cypselas pale-brown, oblong, (4.5-) 5 -5 (-6) mm long, hilum bearded to ca half the length of cypselas. Pappus 2-seriate, bristles of outer row (2-) 4 – 8 mm long, inner bristles scale-like, up to 2.5 mm long.
