Perennial, to 1.2 m tall, basally hairy herb with pale-green, 5–7 mm in diam., grooved, upwardly glabrous stem and vertical rootstock. Leaves bluish-green, radical and cauline, former withered at anthesis; stem leaves numerous, sessile, basally cordate-amplexicaul, broadly lanceolate, 8–14 cm long, 2.5–3.5 cm wide, irregularly toothed, glabrous above, sparsely hairy beneath on midrib and along margins, hairs c. 2.5 mm long, stellate hairs absent. Capitula in laxly paniculate synflorescense. Peduncles laxly stellate hairy, often also with very short (0.1–0.2 mm long) glandular hairs. Involucre c. 10 mm long. Phyllaries bright green, more or less biseriate, lanceolate, 8–9 mm long, 0.9–1.2 mm wide, simple hairs few, 0.5–1.2 mm long, glandular hairs 12–20, 0.1–0.3 mm long, with very few stellate hairs at the base. Receptacle pits ciliate-toothed on margins. Florets yellow with dark stigma. Cypselas 3–3.5 mm long, brown. Pappus nearly 1.5 times as long as cypselas.
