Colubrina glandulosa Perkins var. glandulosa; C. rufa var. glandulosa (Perkins) M.C. Johnst.

Trees (3.5) 6--20 m, bark sometimes described as brown-gray and smooth, unarmed; young branches very briefly ferruginous-sericeous, rapidly glabrescent, bud scales not seen, bud scale remnants and/or scars at bases of branches not seen. Leaves opposite or sub-opposite; blades 8—20 x 4.2—8 cm, elliptic or lanceolate, membranaceous or subcoriaceous, adaxial surface drying dark red-brown, brown-green, black, (less frequently gray-green), glossy or dull, abaxial surface drying green-brown, brown-green, dark red-brown to almost black, 4 or 5 (6) pairs of lateral veins, adaxial surface glabrous or with appressed pale trichomes on main veins, abaxial surface pale to ferruginous-sericeous usually rapidly glabrescent with trichomes retained only on major venation, glands, most easily observed on abaxial surface, dispersed on actual surface of blade (1) 4—12 (19) on a side near margin and in a line more or less parallel to margin with or without additional randomly distributed glands, glands flat and circular, in at least one leaf of every specimen also with one pair of much larger glands at the junction of the petiole and base of blade or to 3 mm from junction, proximal glands flat and elliptic with axis parallel to midvein to parallel to margin and usually hidden abaxially by recurved margin of leaf base and represented on adaxial surface by large elliptical swollen areas, base rounded or cuneate, then decurrent often with margins recurved, margin entire and without glands (but see above), apex acute or obtuse, and then short cuspidate; stipules not seen; petiole 12--35 mm, glands at junction of petiole and blade often present. Inflorescence axillary compound cymes, corymbose or with strongly divaricate branching, solitary in leaf axil, 1.5—2.5 x 1.5—3.5 cm, ferruginous-tomentose, bracteoles caducous at or shortly after anthesis, peduncle 2--5 mm. Flowers on pedicels 1.5—4 x 0.3—0.5 mm, in fruit 2—4 x 0.75—1.25 mm; hypanthium 1—1.5 x 1.75—2.5 mm. Sepals 1.2—1.5 mm. At anthesis disc nearly filling the mouth of the hypanthium and totally hiding the inferior ovary, glabrous. Mature fruit 6.5—9.25 mm, red-brown, basal 1/3—2/5 concealed by hypanthium 2.5--3 mm, epicarp and mesocarp breaking regularly with and initially adhering to endocarp, later separating, columnella absent. Seeds ca. 4 mm, broadly elliptic or obovoid, black, seeds sometimes retained on receptacle after fruit breaks away, aril retained on seed or on receptacle.

Rare, wet forest, Atlantica Norte, 20--50 m, fr mar, Little 25223, 25394; Honduras to Panama, South America to Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.
