Distribution : Distribution: Caucasus, Central Asia, China. Cultivated in temperate areas worldwide for its edible fruit (apricot) and seed.

It is characterised by dark purple velutinous fruits and pedicels 4-7 mm long. It is not known from the wild.

Tree 5-8(-15) m tall, deciduous, unarmed. Perulate winter buds purple-red; bud scales usually pubescent. Young branchlets glabrous and shiny. Leaf blade broadly ovate to orbicular ovate, 4-11(-12) x 3.5-8(-10) cm; base rounded to subcordate or shortly cuneate, sometimes with several glands; apex acute to acuminate; margin crenate-serrate; adaxially glabrous or finely pubescent, abaxially densely pubscent in vein axils or glabrescent. Petiole 1-3.5(-4) cm long, glabrous or pubescent, usually with 1-6 glands. Stipules minute, up to 0.5mm, obtuse and pubescent at apex. Flowers solitary or occasionally in pairs, 2-4.5 cm in diameter, appearing before the leaves. Pedicels 1-3 mm long, pubescent. Hypanthium cylindrical, 5-7 mm long, pubescent outside at base. Sepals ovate to broadly elliptic, 3-5 mm long, reddish, pubescent towards the margin. becoming reflexed, apex acute to obtuse. Petals white or pink-tinged, orbicular to obovate, 8-20 mm long, shortly clawed, apex rounded. Stamens 20-45, filaments white, glabrous, slightly shorter than petals, anthers yellow. Ovary densely pubescent. Style about as long as stamens, pubescent towards the base. Drupe orange, yellow or cream, often red-tinged, sub-globose to ovoid (rarely obovoid), 1.5-2.5(-5) cm in diameter with a lateral furrow, usually glaucous, minutely pubescent; mesocarp fleshy, clinging to endocarp or free; endocarp ovoid to ellipsoid, compressed, 1.5-2 cm long, scabrous or smooth, with keel-like ribs on one side.
