Notes: This species of glabrous shrubs and small trees is characterized by its medium-sized leaves that lack domatia; its well developed calyptrate stipules that are deciduous leaving a rather large scar or persistent base, and forming notably well developed conical axillary buds; its terminal, paniculiform inflorescences with reduced bracts; its short truncate to denticulate calyx limbs; and its medium-sized flowers. Coussarea carolinana has sometimes been confused with Coussarea talamancana, but Coussarea talamancana has larger leaves and fruits. Coussarea caroliana is also similar to Coussarea veraguensis, see comments under that species, and can be confused with Coussarea paniculata although this last differs in its pilosulous leaf domatia.
Distribution: Wet forests at 600-1800 m in Costa Rica.
