This species is showy in flower, and is the national tree of Nicaragua and widely cultivated in some tropical countries. Its population structure in Nicaragua was studied in detail with genetic data by Dávila-Lara et al. (2017), who found separated populations still rather well connected genetically and suggested that the wind dispersal of the seeds is effiicient and plays a role.
