Notes: This species of robust, glabrous shrubs and trees is characterized by its generally rather large leaves; its well developed calyptrate stipules that generally leave a well developed persistent basal portion after they fall off; terminal, cymose, ebracteate inflorescences; well developed truncate calyx limb; fleshy, rather large corollas; and large fruits.
Distribution: Wet vegetation at 10-800 m in southern Costa Rica and northwestern South America, from Costa Rica to northwestern Ecuador.
