Notes :

This species is widespread, rather common, and showy. It is variable morphologically and in habitat, and has variously been recognized as a polymorphic species that included the plants here separated as Coutarea alba, or subdivided into various species. Here it is circumscribed following Ochoterena (1994), broadly but as a separate species from Coutarea alba. Phylogeographic study in coordination with field work will probably change our systematic view of these plants. The flowers are showy and weakly zygomorphic, and this species is sometimes not recognized as Rubiaceae.

Distribution : Seasonal to wet vegetation at 0-1400 m, Mexico to Bolivia and Argentina.
