Description Trees to 9 m tall, the branchlets terete, ultimately angular, glabrous, the nodes 3-15 cm apart. Leaves oblong, ovate oblong, rarely rotund, 8-32 cm long, 3.5- 22 cm wide, rounded or widely deltoid at the apex, obtuse, cuneate, acute, rarely truncate at the base, the costa plane or grooved above, prominent beneath, the lateral veins 6-8, the intervenal areas delicately reticulate, the margin usually revolute, subcoriaceous, shiny and glabrous above, glabrous to occasionally fine- ly puberulent beneath, the petioles lignose, 0.3-2.5 cm long, glabrous, the stipules triangular, 1.0-1.3 cm long, obtuse, coriaceous, glabrous, somewhat dilated near attachment. Inflorescences terminal, glabrous, drying black, the elongate flowers in cymules disposed radially at the end of a short peduncle, the latter 0.5-2.2 cm long. Flowers sessile or subsessile, the hypanthium oblong or turbinate, ca. 0.8 cm long, smooth, glabrous, drying black, the calycine cup shorter than the hy- panthium, thickly carnose, the teeth evanescent or 5, triangular to subrotund, to 0.5 mm long; corolla white, elongate, slender, in bud having a clavate appearance, the connate lobes oblong or ovate oblong, distinctly flexed, to 1.5 cm long, obtuse, the tube 4.0-12.5(-16.0) cm long, 0.2-0.4 cm wide, glabrous outside, puberulent at the base and at the mouth within, thickly petaloid, the lobes 4, often reflexed at maturity, narrowly oblong, 1.2-1.7 cm long, puberulent proximally; stamens 4, the anthers exserted, oblong, crescentic, ca. 4 mm long, acute at the apex and base, the abaxial face puberulent, the filaments attached at the mouth, shorter than the corolla lobes, the style filamentous, as long as the corolla tube, the stigmas digitiform or narrowly oblong, ca. 2 mm long. Fruits resembling an or- ange, globose, 4-5(-6.7) cm in diam., maturing yellow, smooth, glabrous, the seeds white to greenish, numerous in a greenish pulp.
Habit Trees
Distribution southern Mexico south to Panama; in South America it occurs in Colombia, Venezuela, in the Guianas, in Amazonian Brazil, and in Peru.
Note The pulp of the fruit is edible. Steyermark's maintenance of P. panamensis, in view of my examination of over 80 collections in Panama, is untenable. The characters used in keying out P. panamensis and P. latifolia (Steyermark, 1967, pp. 322-323) overlap to a great degree. Croat (1979) notes that the flowers are pollinated by hawkmoths.
