Note TYPE: Panama, Dwyer & Lallathin 8792 (MO, holotype).
Description Succulent herbs to 11/4 m tall, the stems terete, dark green, nodose, glabrous, to 1.5 cm in diam. Leaves oblong rotund to widely oblong, to 35 cm long, to 20 cm wide, triangular deltoid toward the apex, often round or obtuse at the base, cuneate, sometimes inequilateral, the costa prominulous above, plano com- pressed beneath, the lateral veins ca. 25, widely arcuate, often with a vein be- tween a pair of lateral veins, the intervenal areas spreading reticulate, thinly succulent, chartaceous when dry, somewhat discolorous, glabrate above and be- neath except for the veins which are sparsely pubescent beneath; petioles to 5 cm long, to 0.3 cm wide, the scars of the petioles hemispherical; stipules tending to persist at the tip of the stem, free, thick, 2-awned, with the awns spreading, triangular, equaling the body, auriculate toward the base. Inflorescences sessile, axillary or on short peduncles, the heads of flowers to 4.5 cm wide, wider than long; bracts arranged in 2 series, the outermost bracts to 14 mm long, 3-8 mm wide, wider toward the apex, polymorphic and often triangular galeate or bifid for ca. 2 mm; bracteoles linear lanceolate, to 9 mm long, galeate. Flowers with the hypanthium ca. 1 mm long, often yellow, the calyx lobes 5(-6), unequal, often narrowly lanceolate and falcate, some compressed galeate toward the apex, to 5 mm long, carnose, minutely diffusely pubescent, the galeate projections to 2 mm long, briefly connate at the base; corolla white, the tube cylindrical, to 6 mm long, slightly inflated above the middle, a few short, glandular hairs outside, white villose within the area of filament attachment, the lobes 5, spreading at anthesis, triangular, to 5 mm long, acute, each lobe with a galeate process just below the tip, the process cylindrical, solid, obtuse, reflexed, to 4 mm long, at maturity shorter than the tube; stamens (4-)5, the anthers oblong, to 1 mm long, the filaments ca. 1 mm long, attached near the middle of the tube; ovary often split in the middle, to 1 mm in diam., 2-celled, the septum thick, the ovules 2, subplane, attached basally, the style cylindrical, to 5.5 mm long, the stigmas 2, suberect, slightly unequal, 0.8-1.3 mm long, slightly wider than the style; ovarian disc yellow, annular. Fruits white, rotund, to 6 mm in diam., carnose, smooth, gla- brous with 10 slender longitudinal veins, the pyrenes 2, plano compressed, the wall thin; seeds 2.

Distribution known only from Panama.
