Notes : This species is characterized by its broadly obovate to broadly ovate, petiolate leaves with a truncate to cordate base and pubescent lower surface, pyramidal multiflowered inflorescences, corollas with the tube ca. 4 mm, fruits 3--5 cm in diameter. The leaves are characteristically broadest at the middle, and often rather 5-sided in outline. The corollas have lobes that are reduced to broad undulations and open aestivation, with the top of the tubular corolla plugged in bud with the anthers. This species is similar to Simira mexicana. Borhidi (2012) diagnosed this species based in part on its petiole length, which he described as 25--40 mm long; the F isotype specimen has petioles 20--25 mm long, however.
Distribution : Deciduous forest at 60--300 m, southern Mexico (Oaxaca, Chiapas) and El Salvador.
