Notes: This species is characterized by its pedunculate, several-flowered, cymose inflorescences with the flowers arrangements on dichotomous to perhaps shortly monochasial axes and pedicellate flowers; rather well developed calyx limbs that are lobed for more than half of their length with the lobes ligulate to broadly elliptic; robust corollas with the tube 29-39 mm long; and rather short capsules, ca. 10-35 mm long. The inflorescences characteristically are congested when the buds form, and then the axes develop axes. This species is similar in general aspect to Joosia pulcherrima, which has calyx limbs that are subtruncate to shallowly lobed and shorter corolla tubes. Joosia standleyana is also similar to Joosia aequatoria, which has subsessile flowers with narrower ligulate calyx lobes and a shorter corolla.
Distribution: Wet forest vegetation at 500-2600 m in the Andes from northern Ecuador through central Peru. Joosia standleyana appears to be widely distributed but not frequent in any particular area.
