Annotation:
Publ. as "Indicus". Razafimandimbison (Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 89: 4-5, 2002) reviewed the controversy about the identity of this name, and concluded that although it has been associated wtih the name Cephalanthus chinensis Lam., these names are nomenclaturally distinct. He found that Richard's reference materials were a mixed collection comprising several species from Madagascar and Asia, and that Richard's original desscription matches part of his reference materials, which correspond to the species Nauclea cadamba Roxb. This conclusion agrees with several previous authors, but differs from that of some other authors.
Nomenclature Reason:
Nom. illeg. superfl.: two previously published names (Cephalanthus indicus Lam. and Nauclea purpurea Roxb.) were cited in synonymy in the protologue, and the epithets "indicus" and "purpurea" were both available to use in Anthocephalus so a new epithet was not needed.
