This species is notable for its large size, climbing to 20-25 m into the forest canopy. It is characterized by its small triangular stipules, medium-sized leaves with the tertiary venation generally not visible, short cymose axillary inflorescences, short calyx lobes, and rather small corollas with white tubes and oranges lobes. A fruiting specimen that is identified as this species is similar to Danais aurantiaca in its clustered capsules borne on pedicels or bases that become thickened and give the appearance of the fruits being fused at the base.
