Synonym Lorenzanea vernicosa Liebm., Vidensk. Meddel. Dansk Naturhist. Kj0ebenhavn 72. 1850. TYPE: Costa Rica, Naranjo, Oersted (not seen; F neg. 13379).
Description Tree 7-12 m tall; young branchlets densely and persistently subappressed- puberulous, eventually glabrate. Leaves alternate, 11-19 cm long, 6-9 cm wide, elliptic to obovate-elliptic, obtuse or acute to shortly and abruptly acuminate, broadly cuneate to rounded at the base, coriaceous, entire to remotely and in- conspicuously serrate, drying brownish olive below, darker above, the midvein impressed above, raised below, lateral veins plane or impressed above, prominent below, tertiary venation prominulous below, puberulous above and below, gla- brescent except along the main veins below; petiole 1-2.5 cm long, puberulous. Inflorescence arising from the branchlets below the leaves, pyramidal-paniculate, the sessile flowers densely congested along second order and/or third order branchlets. Flowers greenish; sepals suborbicular, the margins erose-ciliate, oth- erwise glabrous, ca. 1 mm long; outer petals drying blackish, triangular-ovate, the apex obtuse, ca. 2 mm long, ca. 2 mm wide, the narrow margin thinner, the inner petals narrow; stamens 2, the anther thecae thick, subglobose, ca. 2 mm long, widely separated by the thickened connective; ovary ovoid, ca. 0.5 mm long, the style 1-1.2 long, the stigma undivided; disc obsolete. Fruit obovoid- globose, 2.2-2.5 cm long, 1.8-2 cm wide, the surface broadly wrinkled when dry.
