1b. ssp. discolor (Ser.) E.M. McClint.

H. arborescens var. deamii H. St. John

H. arborescens var. discolor Ser.

H. cinerea Small

Leaf blades with the undersurface appearing gray, moderately to densely pubescent, the hairs present both on and between the veins. May–June.

Scattered in the Ozark and Ozark Border Divisions and Crowley’s Ridge (eastern U.S. west to Missouri and Oklahoma). Mesic upland forests, bases and shaded ledges of bluffs, and banks of streams, rivers, and spring branches.

This subspecies is less common in Missouri than ssp. arborescens. It tends to be encountered more frequently toward the northern and eastern portions of the species’ distribution in the state, but occurs to some extent in nearly every county in which ssp. arborescens has been collected.
