Note:
Howell's types are presumably at OSC (TaxLit; Index Herbariorum); two duplicates of Howell 1498 at OSC are curated as types of this name, and one of these, OSC-96589, was annotated apparently in Howell's hand as "Type Specimen", which seems to indicate it as the intended holotype. This specimen was later curated by OSC stff as the holotype, presumably based on knowledge of the Howell's collection. Later Evander, Syst. Bot. Monogr. 3: 35, 1984, cited the UC duplicate as the holotype, without discussion and without mention or study of the OSC duplicates. The typification of this species seems to need more study using a later nomenclatural code in which typification is more carefully spelled out.
