12b. ssp. pumila

Stems densely pubescent with some or most of the hairs 2- or 3-branched. Leaf blades 3–8(–10) cm long, pubescent with many or most of the hairs 2- or 3-branched. 2n=24. May–August.

Scattered in the southwestern quarter of the state, uncommon farther north and east (Nebraska to Illinois south to Texas and Louisiana). Glades and upland prairies; also strip mines, railroads and open, disturbed areas.
