Nomenclature:

Type: Described from Portugal and Spain, Herb. Linn. no. 1220.5 (LINN). [Plate 40]

Common name:

Rocky or Mediterranean Pollitory-of-the-wall; כותלית פורטוגלית

Habitat:

In fissures and crevices of old walls, rock crevices and shaded places. Coastal Carmel, Sharon Plain, Philistean Plain, Mt. Carmel, Esdraelon Plain, Mt. Gilboa, Shefela, Judean Mts., Judean Desert, Hula Plain, Upper and Lower Jordan Valleys, Dead Sea Valley, Gilead, Ammon, Edom.

Area distribution:

Mediterranean, extending into contiguous areas of the Irano-Turanian region.

Notes:

     A form with larger leaves (3-4 x 1-1.5 crn.) is occasionally met with; its taxonomical status has not yet been elucidated.

     Annual, puberulent, 10-30 cm. Stems thin, flaccid, prostrate to ascending. Leaves (1-)1.5-2.5(-4) cm., generally less than 1 cm. broad, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, tapering at base and apex, minutely papillose and ciliate above; petiole shorter than blade, filiform, pubescent. Cymes many, subsessile at axils, dense. Bracts small, about as long as flowers, lanceolate, green, scarcely growing in fruit. Hermaphrodite flowers few, sterile, the rest pistillate, fertile. Perianth about 1.5 mm., with 4 connivent segments enclosing the brownish, shining achene. Fl. February-May.
