general taxon notes:
Actinothuidium has the largest plants in the Thuidiaceae. It is characterized by having erect plants, regularly pinnately branched stems, widely ovate or triangularly ovate leaf bases, papillose branch leaf cells with papillae at upper corners, and the cylindrical capsules. The genus is very close to Hylocomiopsis Card.

Actinothuidium is mainly distributed in Himalayan mountain regions and found in various places of China. The genus used to include two species with Actinothuidium sikkimense Warnst. endemic to Himalayan regions. Recently, Watanabe (1991) reduced the latter species to synonymy of A. hookeri (Mitt.) Broth. This species occurs in northeastern, northwestern and southwestern China as well as Taiwan alpine forest regions.

The genus is also treated under the Helodiaceae.
