Discussion : Aloina is a genus of very small mosses that have strongly infolded leaf margins and long, thin-walled filaments on the ventral surface of the leaves. Within the Pottiaceae similar leaf borne filaments also occur in Aloinella, Crossidium, and Pterygygoneurum; the feature is found, albeit less well-developed, in Pseudocrossidium and Acaulon. Delgadillo (1973, 1975) distinguished Aloina on the combination of its well-differentiated leaf base, strongly infolded leaf lamina that is bistratose near the costa, the presence of filaments on the ventral surface of both the costa and the lamina, and apical thickenings on the terminal cells of the filaments. Aloina was revised by Delgadillo (1975). There are 12 species currently placed in Aloina (Crosby et al. 2000).

Leaves erect-incurved when dry, erect when wet, cucullate, lamina bistratose near costa, unistratose at margins; margins entire to irregularly crenulate, infolded above; costa percurrent to subpercurrent, guide cells and single (dorsal) stereid band well-developed, ventral surface layer differentiated as uniseriate, branched filaments, filament cells cylindrical to spherical, thin-walled; upper cells rectangular, elliptic or transversely elongate, thick-walled, smooth, basal cells quadrate to rectangular, thin-walled, smooth, hyaline, alar cells not differentiated. Dioicous. Setae smooth. Capsules cylindrical, erect, smooth; exothecial cells rectangular, thin-walled; stomata in neck; opercula conic-rostrate; annuli persistent; peristome yellow, basal membrane short, teeth erect or once twisted. Spores finely papillose. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth.
