general taxon notes:

Eight species and two varieties of Amblystegium were reported for China (Redfearn et al. 1996). Four of them have been synonymized and transferred to other genera of the Amblystegiaceae [A. rivicola (Mitt.) A. Jaeger = Leptodictyum humile (P. Beauv.) Ochyra, A. schensianum Müll. Hal. = Leptodictyum humile, A. squarrosulum Besch. = Campylium squarrosulum (Besch.) Kanda, and A. tibetanum (Mitt.) Paris = Campyliadelphus polygamus (Schimp.) Kanda]. Amblystegium compressum Mitt. (Mitten 1891) was neglected by Redfearn et al. (1996). It was treated by Noguchi (1972) as a synonym of Pseudoleskeopsis japonica (Sull.) Iwats. or by Iwatsuki (1976) as P. ziippelii (Dozy & Molk.) Broth. After examining the holotype of Amblystegium compressum, it is clear that this species should be excluded from the Amblystegiaceae. Two species and one variety are recognized here for China.
