Amphidium contains 10 or more species distributed in the temperate and tropical mountain regions; a single species, given below, in the Neotropics. The finely papillose stems and leaves, emergent to slightly exserted, ribbed, eperistomate capsule, in combination with other features of this species, are diagnostic. Previously placed in the Dicranaceae and Orthotrichaceae (Lewinsky 1976), and more recently in the Rhabdoweisiaceae.
