Plants in yellow-green to dark-brown turfs, light- to red-brown below. Stems rarely branched, with a distinct central strand. Propagula none. Leaves ligulate to lanceolate, keeled, narrowly and deeply grooved along the costa; margins plane or occasionally slightly recurved at midleaf and below; costa usually excurrent as a pellucid mucro, covered ventrally by smooth, narrowly rectangular cells, with a single, dorsal stereid band; upper cells subquadrate, with thin or evenly thickened walls, usually ± uniform in size and shape, with papillae usually coarse, numerous, centered over the lumen; cells near base of costa somewhat differentiated. Dioicous. Perigonia gemmiform, on short, lateral branches. Perichaetia on short, lateral branches, the inner leaves ovate- to oblong-lanceolate, sheathing the base of the seta; cells elongate, thin-walled. Setae elongate; capsules ellipsoidal to ovoid, narrow-mouthed, weakly sulcate when dry; annulus poorly differentiated, consisting of 2 layers of yellowish to reddish, transversely elongate, somewhat vesiculose cells; operculum obliquely long-rostrate; peristome none.
