Notes:
Barbula is stated to contain about 200 species, probably far fewer, with a worldwide distribution; about 20 species in the Neotropics. The status of many of the “endemic” or reported Barbula species recorded for the Tropical Andes are unknown. Generally found in open premontane to high montane, páramo and puna, often associated with disturbed sites in the Tropical Andes; on soil and rock. A world revision is very much needed for this genus The genus can be confused with Didymodon, however, Barbula generally exhibits an apex that ends frequently in an apiculus of one to few cells. The laminal cells exhibit distinct papillae that obscure the cell lumen and readily observable along the leaf margin. Only the rather common species are provided for in the keys.
 
Barbula contiene ca. 200 especies, probablemente este número es menor, está distribuida en todo el mundo; ca. 20 especies en el Neotrópico. En Bolivia cuatro especies han sido registradas actualmente. El género puede ser confundido con Didymodon, sin embargo, Barbula generalmente presenta un ápice que termina frecuentemente en un apículo de una hasta pocas células. Las células de la lámina presentan papilas conspicuas que oscurecen el lumen celular y son fácilmente observables a lo largo del margen de la hoja. Hyophiladelphus agrarius (Hedw.) R.H. Zander puede encontrase en la ecoregión amazónica de Bolivia, es conocida en el estado de Acre en Brasil; esta especie, previamente localizada en Barbula, se distingue por las hojas espatuladas, células superiores de la lámina no papilosas, abultadas en el haz y planas en el envés; y costa marcadamente excurrente.

Plants forming loose turfs, green to yellowish- or blackish-brown. Stems erect, simple or few branched by innovations; central strand well-developed. Leaves ovate, spathulate to ovate-or triangular-lanceolate, ventrally broadly concave or narrowly channeled, apex rounded to acute, base weakly differentiated to sheathing; margins plane to recurved, rarely enrolled, entire to dentate distally; costae single, ending below apex or short excurrent, ventral and dorsal surface cells quadrate to elongate, papillose or smooth, in cross-section with dorsal stereid band well-developed, ventral band weakly differentiated, guide cells 2-4; median and upper cells quadrate to short rectangular, thin- to thick-walled, firm, smooth and flat on both surfaces to weakly convex or bulging adaxially, epapillose or papillose, papillae solid or hollow, over cell lumen, often multiplex; basal cells rectangular, smooth to weakly papillose. Dioicous. Perichaetia terminal; leaves often enlarged and elongate. Setae elongate, twisted. Capsules erect, urn short- to long-cylindrical; stomata at urn base; annuli in 1-2 rows, occasionally revoluble to deciduous; opercula short- to long-conic; peristome weakly to strongly twisted, teeth 16, divided into 32 filaments, spiculose; basal membrane low. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth and naked. Spores finely to distinctly papillose.

Hojas ovadas, espatuladas hasta ovadas o triangular-lanceoladas, ventralmente ampliamente cóncavas o angostamente acanaladas, ápice redondeados hasta agudos, bases débilmente diferenciadas hasta envainadoras; márgenes planos hasta recurvados, rara vez enrollados, enteros hasta distalmente dentados; costa simple, terminando debajo del ápice o corto-excurrente, superficie ventral y dorsal de las células cuadradas hasta alargadas, papilosa o lisa, en corte transversal con una banda dorsal de estereidas bien desarrolladas, banda ventral débilmente diferenciada, 2-4 células guía; células mediales y superiores cuadradas hasta corto-rectangulares, con paredes delgadas hasta gruesas, firmes, lisas y planas sobre ambas superficies hasta débilmente convexas o abultadas en el haz, con o sinpapilas, papilas sólidas o huecas, sobre el lumen celular, a menudo múltiples; células basales rectangulares, lisas hasta débilmente papilosas.
