1. Coscinodon Spreng.   筛齿藓属 shai-chi xian shu

Plants small, yellowish green or brownish green, appearing grayish due to hyaline hair-pointed leaf apices, in dense cushions. Stems shortly irregularly branched; central strand present. Leaves lanceolate, keeled, with bistratose plicae on both sides of costa, with hyaline, long hair-pointed leaf apices; leaf margins plane; costa strong, single, percurrent; upper leaf cells small, irregularly quadrate, thick-walled; basal leaf cells shortly rectangular, with thicker transverseal walls. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves distinctly larger than stem leaves, not plicate. Setae short, straight; capsules immersed or slightly exserted; opercula shortly rostrate; columella free from the operculum; annuli absent; peristome teeth irregularly divided above, strongly perforate, papillose. Calyptrae large, campanulate, nearly covering the entire capsule, plicate, lacerate at the base. Spores small, nearly smooth.

 

There are about eight species of Coscinodon in the world, and each one has a narrow distribution except for Coscinodon cribrosus. The genus, with C. cribrosus, was first reported from Taiwan (T. Cao et al. 1991), and it is recently known from Mainland China (Muñoz 1998b).
