Hyophila contains some 80 species distributed in temperate and tropical regions; 25 species recorded but possibly only five in the Neotropics. The genus is characterized by a combination of features, spathulate to ligulate leaves, laminal cells bulging on ventral side, dorsally somewhat convex, lacking papillae, little differentiated basal cells or only slightly so at leaf insertion, armed or slightly branched gemmae and absence of a peristome.
 
Hyophila contiene unas 80 especies distribuidas en regiones templadas y tropicales; 25 especies han sido registradas en el Neotrópico, pero posiblemente sólo son cinco especies. El género se caracteriza por la siguiente combinación de características, hojas espatuladas a liguladas, células de la lámina abultadas en la superficie ventral, dorsalmente algo convexas, sin papilas, células basales poco diferenciadas o sólo escasamente en la región de la inserción de la hoja, yemas con proyecciones o escasamente ramificadas y ausencia de peristoma.
