Plants large, robust, stiff, green or brownish green, glossy, in loose tufts. Primary stems creeping; secondary stems erect, almost leafless below, with dense rhizoids at base, sparsely foliate above, with small leaves, pinnately branched or dendroidly branched, rarely flatly branched. Basal leaves small, triangular or ovate-lanceolate, gradually acuminate, appressed or spreading; branch leaves not decurrent at base, concave, not plicate; dorsal leaves sometimes dimorphic, usually rounded-ovate or ovate-lanceolate, abruptly acute or acuminate; margins only slightly involute at base, irregularly and sharply dentate with double teeth; costae ending below the apex or slightly excurrent, dentate at back; leaf cells narrowly rectangular, thin-walled, rarely papillose at back; basal cells shorter, porose. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves sheathing at base, abruptly and slenderly acuminate. Setae elongate; capsules cylindrical, clearly plicate, erect, horizontal or pendulous, slightly curved; opercula conic at base, long rostrate. Calyptrae cucullate. Spores smooth to minutely papillose.
