The genus Physcomitrella presently consists of two species, P. patens (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp. in B.S.G. and P. readeri (C. Müll.) Stone & Scott in the world. There are several subspecies recognized under P. patens by B. C. Tan (1979). One subspecies, P. patens subsp. californica (Crum & Anderson) B. C. Tan, is found in China.
